If you waste 3 days on a course aswell as taxpayers money you have to be better
Takings off all first cleans till march 7th 2014
October  total=  cleaned  extra per month
November = cleaned extra per month

just said it to be ironic ian ...after all the debates on here and the contrasting views. there should be a poll on who thinks its good and who thinks its a waste of time 2 choices and see what comes out on top .... that would give us a good indication of what of the general opinion is .... instead of the usual suspects dominating the threads

Everyone has goals they want to achieve, be it keeping a roof over their head, paying for a family holiday, a nice car, 3 nice cars and a trophy wife, all different goals, but goals none the less.

I think we all have our own pals in business, making us all very similar. No matter how large or small we may be.

Just wondering what makes you different from your competition and a better choice to the customer ?

Regarding 99% of our competition, what we do that is better is

1. We clean their windows
2. We keep coming

If you do those two then 80% of customers are for life.  The rest is detail.

Apart from usual - polite, courteous, smart & regular service
I'll always do a bit extra if needed - the customers I've met know ill help them with little jobs, especially the older ones

Eg - one old dear had blocked drains at the beginning of the year and was very upset when I called as her toilet wouldn't flush!
I inspected the outside drains, then phoned the water board for her and laid it on thick about her being old and on her own - they came out within the hour and cleaned all the drains and didn't charge a penny

Little bits like this make a difference and word of mouth works wonders

Maybe not different to some on here, but definitely different to the vast majority of window cleaners that fail on those points.

I don't think I want to be 'better' or 'different', I just want to earn enough without it giving me some stress related illness.

I'm not sure my customers want 'better' or 'different' either; they just seem to want their windows cleaned at our agreed frequency and not to feel ripped off in anyway.

I came to window cleaning for a simpler life and now I'm here I don't want to mess it up with overcomplicating stuff.

Being different doesnt automatically mean better or preferable. Standing out from the crowd doesn't mean it's advantageous necessarily. Being professional in all its definitions is likely to be at the very least adequate or sufficient for all,  including those who build the biggest castles in the sky.

I agree.
Most of my customers see me working and shout "Oi, do these, as well".
They don't care what makes me different or that I'm better looking than the rest of you (well, not all of 'um).
They want their windows cleaning without too much fuss; they leave that too you lot.

I'm not convinced that a USP is necessary in window cleaning.
I'm an honest, "does what it says on the tin" window cleaner.  I believe that is sufficient for most customers.  For the few who want/need special treatment, I can do that if the job is big enough and profitable, otherwise I'll leave them to people who have gained marketing degrees.

If you look at this bloke's back posts, you see he makes a lot of sense. Let's all keep this game in perspective eh? It seems that some people would like to be all things to all men. The name of the game isn't who's got the most bits of paper, it's about customers and having enough of them. Then, when you have enough customers, service them well. The guys wo are doing well in this malarky seem to be the ones who work their business well. In most cases, without the whistles, bells and shiney things.

Only my opinion of course, not trying to put anyone's nose out of joint.

correct  its window cleaning. its not a trade 2 weeks & you should be able to clean windows to a good standard. could i fit a kitchen from scratch after 2 weeks training  or build a house no. people try to complicate things its window cleaning you dont need years of training like tradesmen.

This is why the NVQ was introduced. It stops the unskilled labour entering this industry, generates an income and creates more jobs for the training board. It's been too easy to drop in to this trade for too long. Things are going to change!

@dave willis. It won't.
People can still claim to be a 'carpenter' 'builder' 'roofer' without paperwork. They still get work. Only (that I know of) plumbers and architects get in trouble if they say they are when they're not fully qualified.

Just wondering what makes you different from your competition and a better choice to the customer ?
I ask people why they called us.  They tell me they like the thought of one company who can do all of their outdoor cleaning. Windows, solar, fascias, conservatory roofs, in and out of gutters, driveway cleaning and sealing, patio cleaning and sealing, roof cleaning and coating, decking cleaning and oiling.  We have an ipaf licence too.

Does that make me better? I don't know, the customers will tell you.  What I do know is that I am regularly the most expensive quote, but they have me time and time again. So I guess we can't be that bad.

Give the big lump our best and tell him to look in on 'the other section' when he feels up to it.
We need someone to stir it up a bit  ;D.
