The government make the laws NOT the police.
The government have stated we can work so it is your choice.
All my customers were over the moon to see me and all have paid by BACS.
Get out in this good weather and do your job.
-
Am I missing something who enforces the laws.
-
I’ll tell the police 👮♀️ officer unless you can get Boris down here I’m cracking on pal 🤣
-
The police enforce the law they do not make them.
The law states WE CAN WORK no ifs or buts.
-
Tycoon whats point in posting this because it wont be long before some idiot comes on not mentioning no names saying we are desperate shameful and greedy for making a living 🙂👍
-
Just a quick food for thought i was so surprised last week i picked up 6 new customers (no contact)
Cleaning a big house and next door family sat in garden said can you do ours yes £20 paid by BACS now a regular customer.
A good opportunity to expand your business because some window cleaners have downed tools.
-
I took four days off this week as wasn't too sure what was right for me. Back at work again and I printed off the Covid19 information from the Gov.uk website and carry it in the van. This is just in case a police officer got shirty with me. Very unlikely but thought it was a good idea.
-
First time in 36 years i haven't had to go collecting this week everyone in all left money on door step or bin or paid through bank no contact what so ever
-
Good idea that 🙂👍

Mr back gammon why dont you go back into isolation and keep your thoughts to yourself moron
Out of interest, why is it you think your opinion is more important or relevant than Mr Gammons?
And before you say “all he does is have a go at people”, just remember you’ve just called him a “moron”.
I had today off, so I’ve decided to “bust everyones chops”. ;D

I was wondering why he’s on here dribbling poop when he’s supposed to be at work. ::)roll

I have called him a moron because he called everyone that works a moron ,if you read one of his post in one of the threads you will understand why he infuriates me ok

I wouldn’t take on anyone who’s window cleaner had stopped due to the virus. I respect the decision of any window cleaner who decides not to work, I don’t see it as an opportunity to kick them in the gonads.

C’mon that’s a bit over the top JK. Proud gammon is entitled to his opinion even tho you obviously don’t agree with it.

I dont mind anyone having a comment but when they start calling everyone that works a morron ,desperate, and greedy thats not right ,they could just say i have decided to stay at home good look to all you guys still working but no choses to insult us working im not the bad person here just trying to keep my business running until maybe everyone is on lockdown ks ,its the way he speaks

Take a deep breathe mate and just remember that anything you read on here wont (or rather ‘shouldn’t’) actually effect you.
Just like you would tell your kids...”just ignore him”.
Mr Gammon likes a good wind up, bite and he’ll sink his teeth in ;D

I’ve changed the post. As I’ve said elsewhere, name calling isn’t helpful.
I still disagree with you, but we will see what happens in the long run I suppose.

Gordon, is a moron.

I’ve worked this week I’ve gone round with my spatula and have been taking the cream off the top of some work and earned a weeks money in 21/2 days,
I’ve been getting texts and have had 2 phone calls saying you are still coming aren’t you to which I’ve said yes of course I am I need to keep going, this week I’ve worked and of course been shopping I have had far far more chance catching anything shopping over working,I’ve kept my distance if I’ve ever seen anyone although I’ve been yards away worn rubber gloves etc when working.
-
If i have spoke out of turn to anyone including gammon my apologies, im a little stressed at mo had a mental breakdown two years ago and everything that going on at mo is getting to me and i don't want to go down thar route again anyone that has experienced what i went through will understand 🙂👍

You don’t have to apologise JK.
I’m surprised more people aren’t showing signs of stress. (A lot are already though). We’re all in this together as they say. We will get through it.

Do what you think is right.
Unfortunately that's not clear cut.
Right for me maybe isn't right for you.
Good luck everyone. I hope to see you all on the other side of this.
Stay safe.

Very sorry to hear that. As I’ve said, I disagree with what you are doing but what do I actually know. What do any of us know. This situation is unheard of...in human history!
I wonder what we will all be doing in 6 months.
Stay safe and wear gloves when you get the cash ;)

What about your employee, what have you done with him?
I expect this will go unanswered😉
-
To be honest none off us should be bickering life is to short if the government said we would get the grant within week to be honest i would definitely stop at home till all this is over
-
You’ll find out how loyal people are when you don’t work for months and come out of your shell and see that some customers have jumped ship to someone else, shoot me down if you like but one thing I’ve learnt is there is not as much loyalty as you think.
Ok you’ll have many people that will stick by you but there will still be many that will take another cleaner up on his offer if you hibernate for months
all the customers that have been supportive and have been happy that you’ve carried on are the ones that agree you should still be able to work,if you are sensible at the moment work in you’re own and come into contact with no one like I do on my work it’s fine.
Has anyone noticed that they haven’t said you must not go to work if you are a X for a job or X for this job, they’ve said key workers etc but they’ve not said only and that’s final it’s blurred lines.
-
A good opportunity to expand your business because some window cleaners have downed tools.
That's the spirit, all in this together or in it for yourself.?.....
..... Every cloud hey ?
Many are left with a moral dilemma of whether to work next week or sit it out frugally for the next two months and hope the government come good on a promise. You on the other hand see a business opportunity you utter MODDED
-
The thing is which ever way you look at it people see disasters as an opening in most cases, all is fair in love and war and all that.
Doesn’t matter what people say now when we all go back to work properly the last thing you will think of is someone else just you and you’re family, customers are no different at the moment they say yeah I understand blah blah blah when they’ve been looking out of dirty windows for 4 months and the guy across the street is cleaning what will they do,will the loyalty be there still. People have short memories you aren’t related to them and like any other service industry they can choose to use who they like, how stupid and fickle people are some might even say to you I thought you’d packed up the window cleaner that cleans over the road has been coming for months lol,the old general public never fail to surprise me.
-
You can’t say this might not happen in some cases it’s been all over the news the last couple of weeks and my phones full of texts and I’ve had calls from customers like please keep coming, what’s it going to be like in 2 months time when some are still out cleaning and they get seen by other guys customers it’s bound to happen.
How many window cleaners will say when they get asked to clean a new job oh no love he’s still cleaning windows he will be back lol,not many that I’ve come across dog eat dog in this world especially the way the economy might go.
-
The thing is which ever way you look at it people see disasters as an opening in most cases,
Even those that disasters happen to?

Eh

You could get Co-vid19 when you're out working and some healthy stay-at-homer gets asked to clean all your work.
-
You could get it anywhere working out shopping etc more likely out shopping imo,if I can work I’m working I’m not spending what I’ve worked for to keep me at home if I’m what’s looking like allowed to work.
Who’s more at risk ask Boris me out working in a couple of hundred acres or 300 people packed into a toilet roll on the underground,I’ve got more chance in getting hay fever.
-
It’s up to the individual anyway each peoples circumstances are different, you pays ya money and all that.
-
Given the current situation I couldn't knowingly do that to another window cleaner. Sure, if the customer isn't truthful then you've no way of knowing if they actually already had one. Yes no loyalty but if I was a customer I'd call my window cleaner. But perhaps that's just me going against the tide of late capitalism.
-

Doubt many window cleaners would want my customers they are mostly messers 😂
-
On a serious note though I don’t agree with taking other window cleaners customers while their WC is self isolating, it’s bit below the belt, but I do think it will happen to be honest. In my case no matter what after all this is over I need to canvass like mad so if I lose some so be it.
-

What people like that don't realise, is that it could be them in an ICU with all their work up for grabs.
A lot of people think that this virus and other nasty stuff only happens to other people.
-

And they'd deserve each other. Maybe infect each other.
-
im working but will not be taking any ones work on unless they ask me to fill in for them if they have personal reasons for not working. it happened a few years ago a local window had mild heart attack which i knew. one of his customers approached me and asked me to start cleaning hers as her window cleaner had not been for ages. i put her i the picture and he is now back cleaning her windows.
-
Out of interest, those that are still working, do you inform all customers you are coming? I don’t have all my customers contact numbers so wouldn’t be able to contact them all before hand
-
yes i do if i have there contact number. if not a bit more difficult. a few i have knocked on the door stood well back and asked. don't feel comfortable doing this to be honest. i wouldn't just do them without the go ahead. only a couple have said no. in future ill make sure i have everyones contact number.
-
I’ve been working all week and I will be working next week.
I no every single one of my customers personally. And they are very greatfull .
I even pick up shopping for my elderly customers.
-
To be honest none off us should be bickering life is to short if the government said we would get the grant within week to be honest i would definitely stop at home till all this is over
Exactly my thoughts !
I do feel that I am safer working than if I was to go to Tesco though
-

I'm in same position which has left me feeling a bit uneasy about what to do. Not all pay by bacs either.
I should have been more prepared for this.
-
I have informed them if I’m coming I’ve been asked to come if I can when possible,I’m not working in busy areas at the moment.
-
The bulk of my work is terraced house se fronts.

From the Chief Constable Avon and Somerset police, https://www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/news/2020/03/chief-constable-and-pcc-issue-statements-urging-the-public-to-stay-at-home/
“Non-essential businesses have been told to close and we will work with local authorities to make sure this is respected.''
Window cleaning is non-essential. So that's that.
But where have the government said that non essential businesses have to close? This is what I find so annoying.
From the government website ,'' the Government has ordered certain businesses and venues to close.'' https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/full-guidance-on-staying-at-home-and-away-from-others/full-guidance-on-staying-at-home-and-away-from-others#going-to-work
''The Government has also identified a number of critical workers whose children can still go to school or
their childcare provider. This critical worker definition does not affect whether or not you can travel to
work - if you are not a critical worker, you may still travel to work provided you cannot work from home.''
-
I get that going to Tesco is more dangerous than going to work.
Smoking cigarettes is safer than smoking asbestos, too.
-
Whats annoying is the government and police have the cheek to say 2mtr distanceing rules which i have kept to but watching news last night and in the commons the mps are all practically sitting on each others laps no wonder some have got the virus and they only have to self isolate for 7 days and not 14 wow
-

You can draw some similarities between smoking and the pandemic. The warnings are there plastered all over the ciggy packet, yet people carry on.
Some are addicted to cleaning windows, no doubt about that!
-
text a customer yesterday morning who is a police officer. his wife used to pay by cash. only just had a reply yes carry on but can they pay by bacs. may be he has confirmed that its ok for we to carry on.

Yawn. They isolate if they live alone or if they live with one or more persons. Get with the programme.

It's the weekend and we've no homework! He's on his Xbox.
We've worked hard this week and even done the extra challenges set by his teacher on Class Dojo.
There might be a change of career for me after all this. I might go back to primary school.

Yeah, I've found my level (http://www.cleanitup.co.uk/smf/1585400607_grin[1].gif).
I think I'm too good to be a window cleaner, after all this virus stuff. There's more primary school kids staying home than window cleaners.
And I can work from home. Wanna play Fortnite?

Just a thought, has anyone text a nurse or a doctor yet to see if it’s ok to clean their windows?
-
Just a thought, has anyone text a nurse or a doctor yet to see if it’s ok to clean their windows?
I cleaned the windows of a customer on Wednesday, she works in the hospital neurology dept, she said they are currently altering the ward as they expect an influx of Covid-19 patients. She was actually self isolating as her daughter had shown symptoms and the whole family were to be tested on the Thursday. She had no problem with me cleaning her windows.....That said I would totally understand if her mind set changed a little if and when her ward becomes overcrowded with people suffering from the virus.

Yes, I have and high up too. I asked him what he thought.
He has told me that in his personal opinion he thinks the government has made a plea (not a direction) to only work if it is essential.
He thinks I could work but doesn't think it would be viewed positively by the general public.
He added it's possible that restrictions will only get tighter in the days and weeks to come.
His wife is a house cleaning fanatic who would love me to clean her windows every week if I could fit it in to my schedule.
They haven't said I can't clean their windows when I asked.
But I know what they think.
-
Yes it may get worse that’s why I’m only doing what I can when I can.

I'm glad the police are now running the show.
If I get ill, I'm going straight down to the local nick. I'm not going to go an overrun hospital.
-
They’ve had to turn back over 200 vehicles trying to get to pembrokeshire some towing caravans, others in motorhomes.

I have several police officers as customers we have decided to shut down and not work I have spoken to one of them and the policy down hear is anyone who isn’t a key worker is told to go home ,we have read blocks every few miles , if ones argue they are going to be issued a fine and possible arrest , he said the direction from government is crystal clear stay home , the exception is for key workers that need to travel to work not non essential jobs like window cleaning they should not be out , I had a friend stopped on Thursday afternoon and when he tried tk show them the gov web site the copper told him dint try and tell me the law , either gi hime or you will be fined , once you have been stoped you details and vehicle details are put into a data base if stoped again the fine is doubled up to £960 , Ime not saying this is right or wrong but it’s what is actually happening in the street . Another window cleaner was on a customers property cleaning there windows with the house holders consent and the police stoped him and sent him home saying if he is seen out again working instant fine .

i dont believe you...........we are perfectly entitled to work (alone) as long as we keep our distance from customers and follow a few basic hygiene rules and common sense(like refusing tea/coffee,insisting on cashless payments,etc)....
the risk is very small.........

The problem with that, Daz, is that the bobby might not give you the opportunity to apply common sense and socially distance, refuse tea and coffee etc. Why should he?
He might just nick you and ask questions later.
Is that anyway to work or run a business?

Likewise.
All rozzers are bent anyway, comrade.

You could end up having a record day.
A police record day.
-
How are they going to put cuffs on you and keep 2m away?
In my experience, the police are fairly ignorant of the law. Just ask what law you’re breaking.

I dont appreciate being called a liar several others have posted very similar experiences, that’s what is happening down here not in Manchester , we decided not to work so it doesn’t affect us but that’s the way the police are enforcing it down here , the advice is at best ambitions as the police are saying the .gov site sais stay at home ,the bit about can go to work if you cannot work from home , they say applies to key workers only , and I can see there interpretation of that if you read it in context , several other police forces through the country have said the same thing
-
Just dont get caught by the police, same as speeding etc.
No. Speeding is an offence. Going to work is not. To imply they are comparable is misleading.

Not really. What can they do? They are only empowered to impede illegal activities.

Can't wait for you to prove what you say is right . Tell them you're a Freeman on the Land and under the Magna Carta you have free right of passage anywhere !!!! ;D The rest of us are just big scaredy cats staying in for nothing watching our business's grind to a halt for nothing and we've no backbone to stick up for ourselves whilst we peer out our windows scared to venture out.

These are not normal times.
Have some of you never been to a football match? Or been involved in some public unrest?
They move you on, whack you or nick you and you debate the rights and wrongs after.
And they're usually viewed as being in the right. If you get arrested in the present social climate, you're not going to get much sympathy from the general public.
Choose your battles, fellahs.

to ks cleaning
I would never take work from another window cleaner.
I picked up new customers who had not had their windows cleaned for years.
What i was refering to that it was a good opportunity to get new business with nearly everyone being at home.
The roads i normally work are usually dead because everyone is at work.
With everyone being home they were shouting over to me as they had never had a cleaner in years.
-
Most of those roads are going to be dead.

You're right, I don't buy in to all the panic, hysteria and catastrophising that a large part of CIU are subscribing to.
Go and watch some Jethro and calm down.

With less window cleaners around the area and more people self isolating you are going to pick up new calls.
Most of these people would never see a window cleaner as they are normally at work.
It is an opportunity for ALL window cleaners to pick up new calls.

Window Cleaners are now seen as "plagued rats" and the customers allowing you to work will later be lynched by their neighbours if not immediately. They are signing their own death warrants!

You are very brave on a keyboard on some Internet forum but facing armed police get real you would be face down on the floor being arrested , they will not listen to what you have to say or look at anything you might have down loaded to show them , they interpret the law and enforce it not you or I

I crossed a couple of roads this evening even though 456 pedestrian deaths in the UK in 2018 were pedestrians. I also drove a car this morning even though there were nearly 2000 deaths from road traffic accidents (not sure if that includes the drivers who killed 456 pedestrians).
If you want to further minimise the risk of dying or killing someone, never cross a road and never drive a vehicle.
However, given that we're a population of 67 million, the risk of you killing someone while driving, or being killed, is still extremely low.
Context is everything.

I've done two speed awareness courses; there was a copper on my latest one; and when we laughed at him, he shrugged and said 'everyone speeds sometimes, even the police'. ;D

You might do, if you get the virus.
Course you can go shopping, essentially, twice in two days, Daz.

Just been on live chat with west midlands police. As far as they are concerned long as i follow government gudelines its fine with them. But check daily because things can change. A police officer booked in tomorrow given the option to cancel or have just the front done. Wants backs done as well. I am working until told to stop. But respect the decision if anyone shuts up shop.
-
Same here if told to stop what can we do nothing,

Print off the guidelines; read it to them even, from 2 metres away.
Be polite; they may decide to check your tyres. ;D

I contacted Merseyside Police via twitter yesterday and received this reply.
Hi government guidelines state that non essential work must not be carried out John.
UPDATE
Today i contacted Merseyside Police on Twitter.
Message
Hi many thanks for your reply but your information is incorrect. I have just received a message from my MP Damien Moore who has stated i can go to work. Clarification was published this morning by the CABINET OFFICE stating i can go to work.
gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-outbreak-faqs-what-you-can-and-cant-do/coronavirus-outbreak-faqs-what-you-can-and-cant-do
SECTION 6 STATES
How can I find out if my work is essential or not?
The government is not saying only people doing “essential” work can go to work. Anyone who cannot work from home can still go to work. I will be working as instructed by the cabinet office. Many thanks
Reply from Merseyside Police
Hi John, apologies for the incorrect advice my colleague has provided yesterday and glad to hear you are able to work and have had this enquiry clarified.
2:06 PM
-
The police won't stop you because they're busy answering questions from window cleaners.
Some window cleaners don't ring the police because they have a mind of their own.
So do some police officers.
-
^^^ Well done, John, hopefully that will trigger some kind of information sharing to clarify it with the rest of the coppers in that area.
I'm sure they've got better things to be worrying about, like investigating internet non-hate crimes, than to be bothering hard-working tradesmen.
-
No what i meant was i will carry on working until the government puts us on lock down not the police 🙂👍
-
To be honest if it wasn't for the idiots still going to beauty spots ,coast and having big karaoke nights and other crap like that we wouldn't be heading for a total lock down

Don't believe everything you see on the internet mate. There's been lots of stupid pics of cars put up at beauty spots saying it was yesterday, they are infact old photos. The Police have even said and commented on such Social Media pictures they are fake.

Which conflicts completely with Point 6
6. How can I find out if my work is essential or not?
The government is not saying only people doing “essential” work can go to work. Anyone who cannot work from home can still go to work.
Separately, there is a list of critical workers who can still take their children to school or childcare. Provision has been prioritised for these workers.
Every worker – whether critical or not – should work from home if they can but may otherwise travel to work.

I do think that since that retired supreme court judge gave the opinion that the Police (Derbyshire Drones etc.) were going beyond their remit we've had a bit of reining in of them. First BBC headlines this morning were leading with it.

According to reports in the Guardian the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) and College of Policing are rushing through guidance reminding officers of the limits of their powers under the law - including that they are not entitled to tell people what is an essential purchase from a shop or stop them driving to a secluded location to exercise.
They deny that any new guidance is being issued, but Whitehall sources confirmed that forces are being reminded to show restraint and existing guidance is being recirculated.

There will only be a round two when this changes.

Talk about what ? the football, if pulled over they will be looking to know why you are out, answering that has nothing to do with having an attitude, now back to the home schooling.

"Any further questions, officer?"
I'd think of a few, Dryo; and I'd make sure I held you up for a while.
School holidays, lad; so there's no homeschooling. Do you want me to do a bit of research about coronavirus and your dogs?
I know you've resorted to digging their holes for their bones but you might not need to.

As F.R. David [that's not my Priest, btw) singeded "Words, don't come easy to me....."
There is an 80's thread already, you know.

Was out working today and had a few police cars going past today giving me the thumbs up
+1
Seen loads of coppers, they ignore me

They might not know that you are going out to work, cleaning windows.
Don't look at everything from a window cleaner's perspective. I've not much time for the rozzers, most of the time, but now is not most of the time.

Gwent Police had a lot of complaints about this disninformation and have pulled it from their twitter feed...

Coppers; not always the brightest, but they get their in the end.

A nark by any chance? ;)

There’s irony.

Their twitter feed. It belongs to them.
You stupid idiot. ;D

That must be worth a smidgen of respect?
If I ignore the fibbing, as well?

Always the first to quote my posts; do you hang around waiting for me to post?
Seriously, this fixation with me isn't healthy for you, Griff.
Have you a man crush on me?

Fibber.
Someone beat me to it.
Don't you tell me what's healthy for me! If I want to have a crush on you I will.

Weird fixation? Don't be so self deprecating. It's a perfectly justified fixation.
I'm only having the craic, chief. I'm not a proper stalker, so if you do stay home, you will stay safe.
Promise.

Seeking my attention under the guise of a compassionate response is still seeking attention with dash of dishonesty thrown in, Griff.

I'm only joshing, Toshing. I do go too far with my jokes, sometimes, I'll admit that.
Like when Rita lost it with Norris, put it down to Kabin fever.
If I'm back at it next week, I might go back to being my old affable self.
I've even missed myself.

Your old self is seeking my attention.
Your back posts are replete with it; you don't contribute; you rarely post other than to seek attention from me.
I'm living in your head; that's not good for you, especially if you're locked down.
You've a young child; get off the internet and go and seek some of his attention; he needs you.

Hurtful, you, Tosh.
But you've brutally shown me the errors of my ways and I can only thank you for that.
Tough love is still love.

Punch and Judy have nothing on the Tosh and Griff show.
