Shurflo John guest fittings?
« on: August 05, 2021, 07:17:59 pm »
Think it's time to retire my 13 year old pump as it seems to be getting a bit tired.
Anyhow, are there any push-fit fittings that connect direct to the Shurflo pump? Think I'll take the opportunity to refit with plastic pipe and JG fittings.
Links would be much appreciated. 👍

Think I've sussed it, they appear to be 1/2" tap connectors basically.

Thats spot on. I have one of them old butterfly type reels too and the 3/4 tap fitting goes onto that great.

Right, normal sink tap connectors won't work it seems as the bsp part needs to be a 'flat end', at least when you reach the DI's which are 3/4" flat end. This seems to rule out using 15mm standard plastic pipe.
So, what size pipe are people using who are plumbing their systems with plastic/push fit?

Not sure about your DI vessels as i don't have them. Here's what i have:

Cheers Cleanclear.  Right, so tap connectors do fit the pump fittings then.👍
I've actually got push fits on my Di's already but they're a different size and I'm sure (if I remember correctly) they had to be flat end fittings, like outside tap connectors that have a flat rubber washer inside. I was hoping to do it all in 15mm but I don't think you can get 3/4" bsp to 15mm push fit adaptors for the DI's. Might end up just fitting a reducer before the vessels.👍

There are two types of JG to 3/4" bsp male.

And

https://www.jtmplumbing.co.uk/john-guest-speedfit-c432/john-guest-speedfit-fittings-c167/john-guest-speedfit-straight-tap-connector-p3240

If the brass one doesn't fit the other one should.

If not, then get a couple of these:

And a couple of these

EDIT: Just noted you said 1/2" BSP not 3/4". All the bits come in 1/2".

Cheers

Yeah, it's 1/2" for the pump but 3/4" on the  DI's.  If the connectors are flat faced on the end then domestic tap connectors don't fit as the tap connector relies on the narrow face of the thread sealing down on the embedded washer/o-ring. Not checked the pump yet but the above picture it must not have flat faced ends. My DI's do have flat ends. I think the solution may be to plumb it with 3/8" pipe and fittings as these are all available off the shelf from coffee machine and beer line suppliers. This is what I currently have on my DI's supplied by vyair, I just have hose adaptors on them at either end.

I'm pretty certain from memory that you can use the non-brass version above and pop the washer from a 3/4" tap connector in there to overcome the problem you highlight.

I'm changing something that uses one of those connectors so I'll take a look later.

Thanks for that. I'm going to try it in 3/8" to begin with from tank to DI'S.  Then 8mm minibore from DI's to reel. Currently all of this (apart from in and out of the DI's) is half inch garden hose. Hoping this will be fine, given the pump already pushes water down 100m of 6mm hose the 5mm pole hose. Although the 3/8" will be very manageable, if I feel it's not sufficient then I'll re do it in 15mm and hopefully get the tap connectors to work with flat washers.👍

Well finally got round to it. 3/8" pipe and push fit connectors from tank to last DI. All works fine with no noticeable difference in flow at all. Doing a full day tomorrow on regular work so will know for sure if there are any issues but initial tests doing my own house shows no difference at all. It's lovely to work with and very neat. Tap connectors definitely work on the pump fittings. They are cone ends and not flat.

Just to confirm it all works perfectly. There is no requirement to use 1/2" hose or even 15mm from tank through to reel IMO.👍

It will work fine but the bigger the hose the less strain on the pump , having said that pushing water through 100 m of microbore  doesn’t seam to affect it that much , but if the tank to pump is bigger hose it will stop any cavitation and supply more water volume which might give more flow to the pole .

This is what I was worried about initially but the pump isn't working any harder or faster than previously at all. In fact it seems to be under less strain. Running the V16 controller at speed 25 for a really good flow with 30 being my maximum for big glass. Manual calibration is set to 48 and this gives a 5/6 second cut off without a huge splurge on restart. The removal of 1/2" , flexible hose after the pump has enabled me to fine tune the dead end more precisely too- particularly with the current climate.
All good.👍

Thanks when I change van I may swap over to this
So absolutely no flow loss with the smaller hose ?
