This was done some months ago by Wavie Davie, but the thread has dissapeared.
Just recently there's been a few lads who've asked if anyone would take them out for a day to teach them how to clean windows. Unfortunately, I don't think they had a great response as their requests were buried in other subject headed posts.
Also, often, new window cleaners are on a budget and can't afford to attend a BWCA course; therefore the next best alternative is to spend a day or two with a local window cleaner to learn the basics.
Remember though, if you can afford it; professional training is always superior to 'learning on the job' as this second method of instruction cannot and does not always provide the quality and consistancy of training a 'proper' course does.
Of course, in return for training the new window cleaner would be expected to provide a days work in exchange for the knowledge he's received.
Just to be safe though, if I had any new window cleaners for a day; I'd teach them ladder safety; but wouldn't let them climb a ladder. What would be the implications should he or she fall? I wouldn't risk it.
They would also be expected to provide their own transport to my house and fit in with my normal routine.
All I'd expect in return would be a positive attitude and the minimum work I'd expect is for you to carry the bucket!
So if anyone wants to learn the traditional way of window cleaning in the South East Wales area; e-mail me.
Who else would be willing to help a new window cleaner?
Don't forget to state the area you work in and what methods you use (ie traditional or WFP).

Missed your post sorry. Im in another part of surrey, Chertsey, Addlestone, Virginia Water etc.
Its the trad method im having a problem with. Im just taking too long. I think i know what it is, was thinking about it yesterday. 1 I haven't quite got the technique and 2 I do the windows as if they are my own so I wash the frames etc.
Now I have hopefully discovered what my problem is i'll give myself a couple of weeks and if things haven't improved maybe I can pop over to you for the day. I need to see someone working and get some points if you know what i mean.

As Tosh has said, there is no substitute for formal training however I can certainly see the benefit of also having a day 'hands-on' with a 'real' window cleaner cleaning 'real' windows so to speak.
I was just wondering what everyone thinks are the most important aspects to cover and whether there would be any benefit in us doing a simple checklist people could work from. Lets face it, even if you use WFP you still need to know how to use a ladder safely - for example, maybe item one could be demonstrating the correct angle a ladder should be used at.
Just a thought. On the one hand people probably wouldn't want to accept any formal responsibility and yet on the other if it's worth doing then it's worth doing properly!?
What do you think? What else would you show them?

My advice to you all would be to look for a job with a window cleaner for a while, one day of trainning is all very well. but try six months of it, you may well find you dont like it or its too much like hard work... All the best.......

Hi all i am a new window cleaner in Norfolk covering mostly Great Yarmouth and surrounding villages.
i started with nothing in january and now have approx £900 per month between myself and my mate.
i am looking for ways to make that bit extra until my canvessing pays of is there anyone out there who wants some help i am fast and good as my uncle taught me and he had been working london for thirty years.
Between the two of us we can do £200 work in a day (more on well priced jobs)
alternativly i am looking to purchase and / or rent rounds in my area.

Im a new wannabe window cleaner (Traditional method) in the Surrey area (Sutton, cheam, belmont etc) looking to give someone a day or twos help in return for the invaluable knowledge of a pro.
Im not a kid, (40), and have had enough of 20 odd years of office work and company bulls**t, and want to go it alone in this business.
Through previous jobs i am fully trained in ladder work (ex BSkyB engineer) so heights and working from ladders is not a problem.
I have already started with a few domestic jobs in my area, but know that time/speed and quality need to move along quickly if i want this to work.

Hi,
Would anyone be kind enough to take me out for a day or two and show me the basics of wfp. I am based in Edmonton/Enfield North London but do not mind driving 30/40 miles to meet up, it does not have to be all wfp a mix of traditional wc and wfp is fine..
I had a wc round about 14 years ago and would like to get back into wc but do not fancy being up a ladder all day every day, wfp seems to be the way forward and I would like to get some wfp experience before going out and knocking up a round, buying equipment etc
Any help would be much appreciated.

Having just formulated the plans for the next stage in my life, I urgently need to get a handle on window cleaning before Mid-August.
I currently live in East London (Bethnal Green), and am seeking some kind soul to take me under their wing for a day or two before I invest in ladders and squeegees - I had envisaged focussing on the immediate domestic market (I have no van), but before I start want to be shown the ropes.
I am happy to work hard and would be very greatful to anyone who can help.
I live in Bethnal Green, but could feasibly travel anywere in Zone 1 (+ Eastern sides of Zones 2 + 3) if required.

In manchester been doing trad for years now so could help out there, but i could do with some experience when it comes to wfp, in mid-change over with my rounds and still doubting my competence with it, an hour or 8 with someone who knows what they are doing would be extremely helpful, i can bring my wfp sytem and help them work at same time in return....sean

i've been graftin off and on for 16 years and there is no magic method to cleaning a window. if you're after setting up yourself you need to take the plunge and canvass a round. it is not easy to get any decent money at 1st. if you've never cleaned a window before you should practice on your home windows. YOU WILL NOT EARN GOOD MONEY FROM DAY ONE SO IT DOES NOT REALLY MATTER HOW FAST YOU ARE! once you have the basic method of fanning and are confident, you will learn other methods that increase your speed, then you will be able to earn more. PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT! one day of practice won't do much. YOU DON'T NEED MUCH EQUIPMENT AT FIRST! just get the basics, t-bar, sleeve, blade, scrim and scraper. JUST KEEP AT IT AND YOU WILL GET BETTER AT IT! if you enjoy the job (there are more positives than negatives) there are dvds that you can buy that will give some hints and tips. YOU HAVE TO BE AN AMATEUR BEFORE YOU BECOME A PROFESSIONAL! there is a learning process to window cleaning, form pricing a job to cleaning a window quickly and safely, but; IT IS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE. if you have enough nouce to go on the internet you can learn to clean a window without breaking your neck. BEST OF LUCK! :)

Hi folks.I'm looking to start a round in the South-East London/North West Kent area (I live in Welling).I've bought the basic kit,as Simon says above,and have been practising basic techniques on my house and family and friends houses.Still feel a bit sheepish cleaning the windows of a strangers house though so would greatly appreciate anybody local (doesnt have to be THAT local) to me who could show me the ropes to improve my technique and generally learn the trade.

What a Fantastic idea for people to communicate in this way, i am new to this site & window cleaning in general so could do with some help!!!! sorry lots of Help!!! lol. I'm just starting up and to all those who are asking for someone to show them the ropes, it's great but I recommend getting away from your area so you can really get the most out of the day. If you stay in your own area people will only tell you so much and not pass on the trade secrets you will need. I just traveled from Portsmouth to Eastbourne to spend the day with a windy. We had a get day covering both trad and wfp. I learnt so much got some hands on and top advice. I'm just not sure you will get that from someone on your door
