Weed killing on block paving
« on: February 09, 2014, 10:54:53 pm »
I do a fair bit of drive cleans and sealing but am knocking the sealers on the head this year. Does anybody know a decent weed killer which could be applied a week before a clean and where you can buy it from preferably in bulk?

If you only wait 24 hours it aint worth wasting your time going to spray it as it aint going to do anything.  Round up pro takes about 2 weeks to kill weeds.

Roundup (and most) weed killers  contain the active ingredient glyphosate which is systemic in action. This means that it is absorbed through the leaves of the weed and then it travels within the weed to all parts including the roots.
Once it has fully circulated within the weed, it then causes death....by preventing the plant making it's food.
Glysophate is bio-degradable it  will break down instantly on contact of anything other than leaf matter. It is absorbed into the plant within about 4-6 hours....Hence no rainfall should occur for that period. The damage is then done regardless of outward signs.

Do you not need PA1 & PA6 to be spraying weed killers commercially ?

Rosate 36 ,spray about 2 weeks prior , so the leaves absorb down into the stems then into the roots. So i've heard !!!
because you do need a licence to spray. Ed .

Don't you not treat less weedy drives then mate? Or just tell home owner to do it?

I did my Pa1 and Pa6 last year and found it very helpful. Any signs of weeds when doing the site survey/quotation I would factor in a weedkilling treatment. Only do this in dry conditions and calm days, no high winds to prevent drift! Stuff I use i buy locally from a lawn specialist and is round up amenity. It does state that its safe for animals and kids when dry. Once sprayed on it does not actually take long to dry.

I leave it for two weeks before going back to do the pressure washing and have found great results when returning. Some drives that had heavy weeds looked 100% better before the actual cleaning.

I also inform the customer that they may return in places but the Weedkiller only works on actively growing weeds as Chris as explained. Offer to come back to treat the area again a year later if required for a small additional cost £40/50 if required.

I have returned to a couple of drives that had heavy weed growth months after and majority are weed free and still looking good, odd one has signs of growth again but if the customer just treated them at that point it would eliminate them, some people just let them grow and it's then it's beyond privately treating!!

Hope that helps and sorry for the rushed reply!
