New website,.. constructive criticism please!
« on: September 29, 2008, 10:51:27 pm »
I'm putting together a website for John Garnett,... just want some input on the final details.
Any comments & suggestions are welcome:

www.avondhucleaning.com/Majestic/index.html

The site will eventually end up here, but we're waiting on the URL to be transferred to a new hosting service:

www.majesticwindowcleaning.co.uk/

I like how it looks and feels. Navigation is good and the SEO and tags are looking OK. My only comment is all the service links take you to the same page, which is a little congested and the pics are a bit wee and some more info would be good. However this may be the point as some sites give limited info to get clients to call so it depends on the point of view I guess.

On the whole its a good site  ;)

Nathanael, hi.

You build prof. site, indeed.

But in my pesonal opinion, it should be good idea to put phone number on 1st (at least) and other pages. Sure, pictures should be bigger.

The best style (for customers) of w/c websites I have seen in UK is h_ttp://reachandwash.com/

Like it, would prefer a larger typeface though, but very slick.  :)
Oh, and for some reason a third of the page seems unused so seems a waste of available space. So everything bigger (except Johns picture). Hope it helps.

I'll experiment with a bigger typeface. Do you have a nice fancy widescreen hi-res monitor? I have the same and it does look small on my screen,.. but I had to make it work for those ppl who still use a 800 x 600 screen.

Nat, it looks very eye catching and professional. The only problem I could see was that when you clicked the pics on the side (Window cleaning, Builder cleans) it just links you back to the same page.

Yeah looks really good.

The typeface is a tad small, but then i may be working of a large screen :P Personally i would prefer to see the service links take you to other pages, as others have said its a bit too congested. Perhaps you can keep the images the size they are, but allow for enlarging them if you click on them?

Thanks for the topic, reminded me i have to change mine a bit regarding navigation.

Excellent. Very Good indeed.

Spelling: Abseiling not Absailing (You've got it right in one place but not others)

Calculator: No mention of  doors or patio doors

Not down to you but a minimum price in the calculator?

I got the template from www.templatemonster.com

I use them for building all my websites now,.. worth every penny as the job is quicker, and the result is much more pro looking.

The basic templates are pretty much null and void as far as meta tags & SEO for Google are concerned though, so spend a bit of time sorting this out. There's no point in having a great looking website if no one can find it!

The template was $65 or so, Domain name £6 for the year, and a special low price of £100 to put it together (Cause John is a mate!)

Just looked at your site,... there are no meta tags or search engine optimisation bits in the code,... a simple fix, but shoot the designer for not doing that for you. You can have the best looking site in the world, but if Google doesn't put you on the first page, then there really is no point having a website at all.

If you have access to the site to make changes, its a fairly simple job. The lines that start with "meta" are the important ones. Below are the tags off the main page of Johns site (You need tags on every page, each page has to be slightly different as Google penalises you for duplicate links),.. just modify them for your own needs.

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8">
<meta name="description" content="Services. Window cleaning, pressure washing, abseiling, builders cleans & conservatory cleaning in Fleetwood, Blackpool, Cleveleys, Thornton, Over Wyre, Preston, Garstang, Bolton and Leeds. Window cleaning services for commercial, industrial and residential clients." />
<meta name="keywords" content="Our services include Window cleaning, powerwashing, conservatory cleaning, cherry picker work & atrium cleaning in Fleetwood, window cleaning, window cleaners, Cleveleys, Blackpool, Reach and wash window cleaning, pure water window cleaning." />
<meta name="abstract" content="We provide quality, cost effective &amp; efficient, hi-level window cleaning services including Reach &amp; Wash window cleaning, gutter cleaning, fascia, sign &amp; cladding cleaning for  commercial, industrial and residential customers in the Fleetwood &amp; Blackpool area." />
<meta name="expires" content="Never" />
<meta name="subject" content="Window cleaning services" />
<meta name="category" content="Window cleaning services" />
<meta name="rating" content="General" />
<meta name="language" content="en" />
<meta name="distribution" content="Local" />
<meta name="author" content="Avondhu Cleaning Services. www.avondhucleaning.com" />
<meta name="copyright" content="Copyright Majestic Window Cleaning" />
<meta name="revisit" content="5 Days" />
<meta name="robots" content="index, follow" />

<meta name="googlebot" content="yes" />

Yours looks like this:

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
    <title></title>

He didn't even put in a page title!

thanks for that Nathanael!

would it be a case of editing the meta tags just copy and past what you have put? (obviously changing the data for my site!)

Do i need to do anything regarding other pages as you said each page needs to be different.. confused on that bit  ???

Just delete the old meta tags and paste in the new ones (modifying them for your own business of course). Do this on EVERY page,.. but then go back to all the pages except main page and alter the "Keywords", "abstract" and "Description" tags slightly. You can re-use some words,.. but don't have identical tags on 2 different pages, or Google will drop your ranking sharpish.

Thanks for all the positive comments so far guys,.. it all helps improve the final product.

I'll be doing another 3 or 4 sites this month, so I'll post links when they're nearing completion for more critique!

Definitely,.. it does make a big difference. But the quality of the sites linking to you can also affect your ranking. If you've no page rank at all, then any link is good, but if you've managed a page rank of 2 or 3, and the people linking to you are still on zero, it can have an adverse effect.

Can you have the same meta tags for different websites? I mean the exact same content in the "Keywords", "abstract" and "Description" tags, but just use them on different sites (domains) ?

Would that effect your google ranking in a negative way?

they may well class that as spaming.

You did well on changing the site for John Nat, one thing, the pic of van could you blur the edges so it does not look like you have just cut a pic and placed it there apart from that all looks ok.

While I am here if you speak to John could you say I did reply to his email Bt are playing up again on the email server and all emails bounced back highly annoying.

They are delivered via download, and you can use most web authoring software to modify them. To modify the animated bits you need macromedia flash,.. and personally I don't think anything beats dreamweaver for building the rest of the site.

Your keywords and description meta tags could use beefing up, which would prob improve your ranking a lot.
List all the places/area's you work in in your tags, and on every page of your website too.
Also, Page titles containing keywords boost rankings. eg. "Dolphin window cleaners" will do ok if someone searches for you specifically,.. but if someone is searching for a window cleaner in your area then a page title like "Dolphin Window Cleaners | Covering area1, area2, area3, area4, area5" will help you catch much more traffic.

You have to think what the general public will type into google,.. most will type the area they live and "window cleaner",...

:)
