Longest lasting topical sealant
« on: January 09, 2013, 05:31:34 pm »
What is the topical sealant with the longest lifespan for slate. Customer wants it shiny. lithofin slate seal seems to last 12-18 months in a heavy traffic area. What about LTP Ironwax? I have used  the Aquamix low sheen finish but do not know how long it will last as I only used it for the 1st time at the back end of last year.
The customer currently has a HG satin finish water based product in the entrance area to the house and says it is losing its sheen within weeks not months. She would be happy with something that lasts 12 to 18 months.
Any feed back appreciated

Topical sealer as you are aware sits on the surface. It doesn't matter What the expected wear is. Everything is down to two factors, type and amount of foot traffic and type of barrier matting in the entrances to the area.  So two adults with a decent exterior and interior mat who take their shoes off indoors the Topical sealer would probably last 5+ years.  Now the same two adults with 3 kids and a dog, no exterior or interior matting and the kids are allowed to use a skateboard indoors lucky if you get 3 months.  So it needs assessing and explaining to her, perhaps she would be better to go for a strip and an enhancing impregnating sealer and forgoe the sheen in the interests of easier cleaning????

I'd agree with that I always tell them a topical sealant is going to wear off its just a matter of time and realistically they would be better off with an impregnating sealant but some of them still want it shiny. This couple are retired no dog kids etc and an entrance mat so its got the best chance for a longer lasting shine, just wondered which seem to last longest.

Then if you think she won't listen I would go for the Aqua Mix High Gloss Sealer
