What Carpet do you find most often in the UK
« on: March 29, 2005, 03:01:21 am »

In the US , by far the most popular choice of fiber is nylon, followed quickly my polyprop. berbers.  I see very little wool, but often in some of the up scale homes there might be a room or two. So what do you folks see over there on a daily basis?  Jon

P.S. Sorry about all the basic questions, I'm just very interested. :)

Jon,

It depends on which part of the market .

At your end I would expect mainly wool, woolmix 80/20 nylon.

At the bottom end lots of PP and Nylon.

Cheers,

Doug

I agree, 80% wool 20% nylon twist pile is by far the most common.

Very rarely see nylon or else I cant identify it :o.  See lots of wool mix in the main lounges and hall, stairs and landing.  Bedrooms is usually polypropolene or 100% wool berbers which are worse that polypropolene IMO.

Was in carpet right the other day looking for a carpet.  Loads of 100% polypropolene twist.  Very few axminsters or wiltons.  Quite a few 10% wool and 90% polypropolene.  Some polyester carpets which wear really badly.

Didnt buy anything as the wife couldnt see the colour she wanted.

Hi Jonny

In the last survey carried out in the US you had less than 1% wool carpets so it is indeed very rare to see any in your neck of the woods.

Mine would break down in the region of something like this:

75% Wool mix (80/20) twist pile
15% 100% wool including rugs
10% synthetic

a surprising amount of the carpets are axminsters but once again 80/20 s rule my roost?? the axies are usually ancient and belong to old dears and clean up amazingly well a tribute to their quality!!

Mark, what do you mean when you say 100% wool berbers are even worse, looks or hard to clean or wear out quickly?

Just wondered because I have them in 2 of my bedrooms and I think they are quite hard wearing and clean up well.

Phil

I think their harder to clean especially specific stains due to the wools ability to absorb.

I also think they hide a lot of soiling below the loop again which can cause problems during cleaning especially if the carpets been neglected.

At a guess, my residential marketplace seems to be about 70% wool or woll blend, perhaps 25% polypropylene, with only the occasional nylon or polyester. Veggy carpets are a rarity.

This topic started me thinking about the fibres I clean, and what really surprised me was the small amount of nylon that I clean. However, in the office environment, I'd take a guess at 90% nylon. Indian/chinese Restaurants about 110% woven polyprop (the chinese can't get their tongues around the word "Belgian" ;) ) The small amount of Licensed trade I do is 100% woven wool.

Safe and happy cleaning :)
