Ideas to increase your bussiness   2

In a marketing manual for carpet cleaners there is the suggestion that after you have cleaned the customers carpet and they have paid etc that you present the customer with a small gift such as 3 roses as a way of saying thank you and to diffrenciate yourself from other cleaners.

Personally I thought it was one of those clever ideas that these marketing gurus think up, but as far as I am concerned was a bit naff.
What do you think.

Obviously buy not carrying out this idea it would invalidate the manuals guarantee but thats only a side point.

Ian Instead of 3 roses why not give them a fridge magnet with each Job ,one where they can put a photo of the kids in, or dog, but it also includes your name and phone no same thing but different.

Stalker...........no pun intended.

Last time i gave my wife flowers she just tutted and said " I suppose you expect me re-open my legs for them?" I replied " Haven't you got a vase big enough?"

I fully expect joke to be deleted and apologise, in advance, for any offence to the weak hearted ;)

Chris I thought your missus would have said 'what have you been up to?'

Shaun

Ps I use a thankyou letter with a referal message and 3 cards. After cleaning Missus carpets at full price it would seem to me stupid for me to offer her friends a 10% discount when she has been the guinea pig.

Dave ,

No I did not get this from JP unless the company that pubblished the manual did.

As part of the spiel was that many thousands of pounds and much research had gone into producing this manual.

Ian,
Alltec material is all based on JPs Piranha Marketing, if thats the company you refer to. Fast Track info and material is Alltecs, Robert Sauders, English translated/altered version of the same material. The laptop audit sofware is Roberts creation, which he also markets through Piranha, in the States.

Hi Chris

I didn't see your post until it had been in place for a while...perhaps you would amend it yourself if you feel it may offend!

Back to the subject....do any of you remember a company called 'Cecil's Butler Care' based in London some twenty years ago.
The 'late' Malcolm Beese set the company up with his technician, Cecil, who arrived in a London Back Cab dressed as a Butler... he used to remove his coat when on site and put on a Butlers striped apron... when the job was complete he presented Madam with a single red rose and a box of Cadbury's chocolates with the Company logo across it... His prices all those years ago were as high if not higher than some of the London boys charge today ...and he was always busy

Dave,

I promise you I did not get this from Alltec or JP.

Its from
How to Build Run and Operate Successful Carpet Cleaners Business.

The proven guide to success and profitability for your own carpet cleaners business

Actually Ive just re read it and its a single carnation gift wraped from the local florist.

You give the customer this single carnation and put it on top of the television.

A friend comes round for coffee and says where did you get that carnation is your husband having an affair.

No says the lady of the house I got it of my tall dark hansome carpet cleaning man.

Next thing the lady has got you round her house so that she can have a flower aswell.

Hello Derek

Actually now you meantion it I do remember him.  If I recall correctly he also sold HWE machines, similar in design to the cleanright edge i.e waste tank was a lift out bucket. I think he called it Mr Steam or something like that. It might have been a windsor dominator rebadged. He came to my house to give me a demo and turned up in a black Porsche!

When I'm in a customers home I clean the sink using bleach to get rid of the stains and then solutions stainless steel cleaner to buff it up. It takes a few mins and not only does the customer have clean carpets but a shiney sink as well.
As we use the sink it seems only fair it gets a good clean, plus more chance of a tip and referral.

Gary,

That's top-knotch marketing  :D

In similar vein, if you move a piece of furniture that has remained in place for some time, and the back is coated in dust and cob-webs, ask the customer for a duster so that you can deal with this before replacement.

You could keep a duster in your pocket for this, but them the customer would never know that you have taken the trouble.

I did buy a machine from Malcolm ( and a second a month or so later).... picture this.

Arranged to meet him at the Post House in Leicester... called to say I would be late but was on the way.

When I arrived he had booked a small room and arranged sandwiches and coffee... how the heck could you NOT buy after that.... are you reading this all you suppliers?

A very helpful man, his equipment was pricey, but his manner sold it to you... a lesson for us all there somewhere!

The Mr Steam was made by Windsor (US) now owned by Castle Rock Ind) (Prochem) it was rebadged Domminator by Dowding & Plumber as far as I can remember, for the Victor brand. I owned 4 of them,  1st one off Systematic Cleaners (as was one of my first courses and membership into the CCA) now NCCA). I remember using the Windsor "Zinger" with a tool atatchment like a Flymo ! it was very good though for it's day, and the "Pile Diver" weighted DragTool (I still have one of these)  I bet Derek would remember them all.

Glynn,

I too have a Pile Diver, which I still use for flood work.

The weight put on the trailing edge of the vac slot is such that it squegees the water out of the underlay.

The Mr Steam machine was very advanced in some respects, being equipped with water-level sensors for both tanks which switched off pump/vac as required.

Dave,

The foul sewer is the prefered method of disposal for most water authorities.

To dispose of ANY waste water you have to have to pay for a permit, and even then it only lets you dispose of it in one designated place. It is classed as industrial effluent, and as such should be licensed. They dont police it, but you can be fined I think up to £ 20,000 for incorrect disposal. Not saying what I do, the secret police may be evesdropping.

As I use solutions I only have hot water in the tank. Nearly all my waste will be grubby water, so down the loo it goes.

I will tell my customers what you've said though to help market the way I clean.

Hi Glynn

Yep..I do remember them...I will let you into a secret ..promise not to tell anyone!  ;)

There is to this day a 'Zinger' bought from Malcolm Beeze's company, Systematic Cleaners, till operational. It is owned by a long time truck mount user down in 'Essex'.

I won't disclose his name but this 'old man'  ;) reckons it can still put the truck mount to shame... you obviously have the setting up times to contend with though.

You could almost say that the Zinger was the 'Beeze' knees....Gosh that was awful  :-[

Gary, doesn't matter what you use its still classed as trade waste, so technically you need a license and cannot put it down the customers loo. You should put into a container and take it to you designated disposal area. This can be your own loo or similar foul sewer.

Well guys - I don't do alot of carpet cleaning but when I have I've used the loo to dispose of!  When contract cleaning the mop water goes the same way!!!  Only one site I have managed in 8 years or so had designated drains.

It all depends on the chemicals and whether they can be broken down in the right environment (basically can the sewarge works cope with the particular substances that are being used)  Most chemicals used now days are environtmentaly friendy so is not a problem.

As for the fining system - who's going to police it?  Like many areas the law is put into place but until a complaint is made about disposal (or whichever law is being abused) nothing will be done.

The only problem with disposal of waste down a loo/sink is if the customer has a problem with a blockage within a certain amount of time after you have completed the job they blame you!  However if you take the waste outside and empty it down the drain (same place as normal sink will empty into) no one will complain! Bizarre!!

Fox,

You need to make a clear distiction between sink and loo - I'm sure you do when washing your hands  ;D

In most areas there are two separate drainage systems - Storm and Foul. The storm drain is mainly rain water, which requires no processing prior to entry of a watercourse or reservior. Sink drains also often use this drain.

Foul drains take the discharge from the loo and are routed to the sewage works for immediate processing. It is these that are generally acceptable for the contents of your mop bucket.

In a previous thread, it became apparent that, though few water authorities would give a written answer to the question of the disposal of small amounts of trade effluent, the answers given throughout the country agreed on just the point that contaminating the storm drain was considered a cardinal sin.

Dave was the unfortunate one who did get a written answer, whereas I and some others were told that disposal on to soil, provided not adjacent to a lake or  watercourse, was acceptable. The Environment Agency I contacted agreed with this.

One point that was consistant was that regardless of the content of the water, if it is generated by way of trade, then it is Trade Effuent.

John.

You are correct in what you say but because you are carrying the containers for disposal you also need to register as a waste carrier. I think its around £80 for three years.

Strictly speaking that applies to all truck-mount users who do not empty their waste tank before driving away.

If it is £80 for 3 years it may well be worth us all having one, again another marketing tool. Its nothing compared to the thousands we spend on insurances.
I do think its highly unlikely that we would get caught putting dirty water down a loo, but if I was asked by the water board or whoever what I did with my waste I would have happily told them it goes down the WC and wouldn't even have known I was doing wrong.

You are correct.
Even if you took away a piece of fire or water damaged goods for disposal you would require a waste carriers licence. If you took it away for attemted restoration which then failed and you then put it in your skip you would not need the licence.

The good news is that its one licence for the business and does not matter how many vehicles you have.

Regarding waste carrier licences.
The company I previously worked for had one and I recall that it was issued by the Enironment Agency. The initial cost was between £300 & £500, which was for a 3 year period and the renewal cost was between £80 & £100 for each 3 year period after that.
Technically, you are also supposed to have waste transfer sheets for each load disposed of. These should show the nature of the waste, when & where it came from and be signed by both yourself, your customer & a representitive at the disposal site. (A lot of faffing around, and it doesn't usually happen in practice). This situation regarding transfer sheets may differ from region to region. (We operated in the Thames Water Region).

Gary & Mark,
Sorry for the delayed response. My initial reaction was because I thought Gary was putting the waste water down the sink, which I am sure you agree is not the place for it even if it does all end up in the same place The loo is fine as it goes to the foul drain and sewer. Officially you do require a local water authority license to empty your trade efluet into this system. As I use a TM, and as I have said on the many posts on this specific subject, the local advice I have been given is to dump the dirty water on grassland away from drainage ditches, streams, rivers and ponds etc. This is where I dump my dirty water.
