Try a hair dryer to heat letters up they then should peel off, do not get to hot as letters will fragment in to smaller peices leaving you more to peel off.
Remove the  remaining adhesive with meths.
If you intend to have the van re-sign written you could ask the person doing this, they may remove the old ones for you.

Wheres up here here where you say you are freezing ?

hows the oven cleaning going?

hi paul
was using a paint stripping gun on low setting (not to close) but will try the hair drier, frightened i might damage the paintwork...job will have to wait cause it really is too cold (from perth scotland)...Anyway i've got the van, and i've booked some traing with ovenmaster (shropshire)...Ian robinshaw, the propritor seems a genuine person, and for £2000 all in seems to be a good deal...I'll be operating part-time to begin with and already have a fair number of customers lined up.....presume you're in the same business paul, so any hints and tips would be much appreciated (mainly the sales and marketing side when first starting out)....
cheers

Used some bazooka chewing gum spray on mine and it came of a treat, but would recommend testing a small bit first, would want u to damage the paintwork

Yes Dave the 2k sounds a good deal and what i have heard about Ovenmaster they seem a decent bunch. I started an oven cleaning business last October and also do a bit on the carpet cleaning side.

Tar & Glue remover or some thinners will sort it it out. Would give it it a good polish afterwards..

try some cellulose thinners or gunwash from your local autopaint suppliers applied with a rag, usually does the trick, it might leave the surface smeary, a good buff afterwards with cutting compound (if the paints flat/faded) or polish will finish it

Dave,
Have you thouhgt about wrapping your van?  You should be able to see here how its done.  Just take a look at “sign writers” in the yellow pages and you will find few local companies which could wrap your vehicle.  Wrapping guaranteed for about 5 years, I am not very sure for how long it actually lasts.

Arthur

If there is glue left on the paintwork you are heating the letters too much... a 2 second blast with a heat gun from 2 inches away is more than enough.

Autoglym tar remover will shift the remaining glue, and believe it or not it's also good for getting oil out of car carpets!

Anyone who looks through photos of nose jobs in a catalogue of plastic surgery whilst driving deserves disciplining ;D

I believe WD40 gets the residual glue of van paintwork after removing letters quite easily
I'm always in the poo, it's just the depth that varies

Have just finished removing vinyl lettering from a long wheelbase transit (trust me there was alot of sign writing on it).  I used Brake & Clutch cleaner on the glue.  This has not caused any damage to the paint work at all.  Much easier than tar remover, meths so on & so on.

Oil Flo 141

Safety solvent cleaner.  Dissolves a whole host of hard to get rid of stains and marks like crayon, gum, tar, wax, inks, oil, tape residue etc

I also had to remove a load of vinyl lettering off my van, firstl used the heatgun and most peeled off, the residue i then removed with a rag dipped in petrol, all came off a treat.

I would certainly not use celluose thinners espcially if your van actually has any paint, as this is what car body repair specialists use to remove paint, it will strip the paint away in a second.

Petrol will take it off, and then use a little bit of brasso to remove the outline of the lettering that was there so its not so obvious it was there, or a good coat of t-cut, just remember not to put polish on until you have put the new vinyl on or it wont stick, it will also need a good few days to complety bond to the metal

HG sticker remover can be used to remove sticker & glue, always best to t-cut your van as the outline will show up and then wash & wax 8)
