How much do you pay your canvassers?
« on: March 17, 2012, 03:38:39 pm »
A friend of mine is going to have a dig at some canvassing for me, just to top up my round

He's not canvassed for cleaning before, but is more than able to knock a few doors

Do you pay your canvasser basic plus commission? Commission only? Straight hourly wage? He's doing 4-8 hrs a week for me

GD - rate is pretty fair.

if i remember it's  the price of 2 cleans -   but only pay when you have completed the 3rd clean. ( and try not to lose your friendship !! over money )

i think gds rate is fair if the customer dont cancel ur right not to lose friendship over money.

personally i think £7-£10 per customer one off fee cancel or stick is good for a good canvasser.

as the deals could be £15 average then if they cancel its not as bad as it could be if you for example payed 100% or 200% dont forgot u got running costs and if you did a day worth of first cleans that means u could have done your own too

You cant class what you would have done on the day as a loss cos if you need a canvasser you dont have a full round so can just do them another day....

If you bought work for say three cleans you would have to work for three months just to get your money back. You cant expect to make a profit on first cleans using a canvasser like me. I think my terms are fair as you are buying an appreciating asset that has a real value to your business if you decided to sell it...

On the leafletting side (which I know wasn't the question) leafletters work for £15 a day. They are all illegals but next time you see someone delivering pizza menus stop them and ask how much they charge to deliver your leaflet at the same time.

arent you worried that if they know how to get work, and then they learn how to do the work...  that its one small step to them starting up themselves...  and if he's done a lot of the canvassing he'll possibly/probably feel that he's earned those customers himself.

just a thought  :P

Its just a chance people in any business have to take, how many plumbers that have been trained up go on to set up on their own? Lots...

Nobody would ever expand their business if everyone thought like that....

My charges just to be clear are expenses plus two cleans payable over the first two cleans...

too true Richard I know hes gonna set up on his own in about 18 months and I would expect anyone with half a brain cell to do the same also I will help and encourage him all the way - he wont be taking my customers though as its very tricky to use a pole with broken fingers  ;) ... no in all seriousness that wont happen as I will be helping him.

i'm sure you've got it covered ian.  just i've been warned not to teach my WCs canvassing skills, and visa versa.  also not to employ any WC with ambition to set up his own business.  what they say at the start, and what they end up justifying to themselves in 18 months can be quite different....  we look for WCs without ambition!  crazy but true

I pay £10 a deal. No more. I don't see how anybody can say it is worth it paying x2 to a canvasser who has spent just 2 mins at a door. There are tons of people out there who will do it for £5-£10 a deal. After all that's all the boss of canvassing company pays he's staff.

3 years ago when I was doing it I had 4 canvassers and me. I payed them all £10 a deal which still was 50-100 a night for them, but charged 2 cleans to the cleaners we were canvassing for i was making so much money, some nights we got £600+ of new work earning £1200 and after paying the canvassers I'd be left with £800-900 for 3-4 hours work. It was great at the time for me as was like printing money easiest pound note known to man...but how the hell is that justified just for canvassed work??. I wouldn't hand over £2000 for £1000 of canvassed work no way pedro £500 tops.

Bottom line is how easy is it to put an add in a shop window or gumtree or even local paper stating your terms( canvasser required earn averaging £15 an hour start ASAP no experience neccacary). Will get loads of calls I know I did. Save your money for better things for your business.

Why you still not canvassing then mick? Who turns their back on that kind of money?

Because it isn't all repeat work is it. Was never full weeks work, I had 4 blokes relying on me to sort them work each day and it just didn't work out also another problem was the hassle of replacing cancelations and dealing with messers, it was only good short term or if id have been a 1 man band at it, main problem was canvassers saying anything they could to get the deal even me I would say anything just to get that customer. A prime example was if a custy wanted a 1 off I'd put it through as a regular or if customer was 2 monthly I'd still put it as a monthly. So as ou can imagine my rep went down pan and I spent far too much time replacing cancelations.
Only did it 4 months then decided not for me so went  bAck to cleaning and now building my own empire..I'm just thankfull I'm not paying no x2 for doing it. If plans all go ahead I'll be doing just as good or if not better than my top canvassing earnings and it will all be repeat monthly work. Has took me 5 months to build a 5k round with 3 of us canvassing 3-5 times a week round on top of running my round, if I can do another 2 rounds by end of year by getting another canvasser on board then do the math. Regular and repeat work is all I want and loads of it.

All you need is honesty and a desire to do it right, my system of payments guarantees that I cant be dodgy and put hooky work through and take money I am not entitled to.....and it also guarantees my staff wont get paid for dodgy work either....

Repeat work? I have more work than I can cope with....

I'm sure you do gd but your a 1 man band arnt you ????? I'd have had to much on too if I was on my own doing it but I couldn't have hacked that driving 200 miles everyday or spending nights away from family on my own like a loner, with a team it was fun and we could hit targets so much quicker with ought the need to stay over etc. Anyway I only replied to a thread stating £10 is a reasonable amount to pay a canvasser for a new job.

Like I said before good luck you seem to be doing fine as you are. I'm sure you will find many who will pay for your services who don't want to find there own local guys.

I'm being honest gd. What is wrong with that. I always payed back the cancelations and replaced work, im just stating i said anything to get the deal as would any salesman in sales industries as i have done loads so don't see your problem there why are you shocked?? I couldn't give a monkeys what you think I'm happy as lary now with my business and the fact my family don't go without and all my work is regular. with sales all I had was stress.

So because I work on my own I am a loner? I am happy working on my own and so are my many customers, if you were only stating that you pay that why were you bragging about ripping other window cleaners off?

The simple reason people dont have their own canvassers is they dont need new work everyday, they just need to add to their round.

I am sure the window cleaners you ripped off will be happy to know you used the money to set up your empire!

It will come back to haunt you one day, karma is a bitch...

I have worked in sales for over 20 years and saying that all dodgy salesmen do it is no excuse for doing it yourself. There are alot of very good proffessional salesmen who dont have to resort to doing anything to get the deal. If you are good at your job there is no need....

Why you so bothered about me I don't give a poo your up north I'm down south I'm a cleaner your a canvasser..
As for me ripping cleaners off Ask them gd I dont care. Ian wicks( window washers) clear magic I never ripped them off  Always replaced the dropouts and money, I only canvassed for 6 odd firms and 3 of them were recommended from clear magic Steve so as for ghosts I don't have none I did a good job just decided And learnt how much work there is out there so gave it up and built myself up and I won't stop building until I'm massive, I didn't do fake calls or charge more under price others etc..just tryed it on with 1 offs and 2 monthly's and I normally got found out about them anyway hence having to replace them after.
