Hi all,
I'v been asked by a customer to clean his decking. It currently has a green stain which he wants removing and then staining a different colour. Is this possibl and if so, what's the best way to strip the existing stain off????
Any help appreciated!
Thanks
Mick

Soda blasting will do this without damaging the wood fibres.
Its fast too. I did this work once before and it took forever trying to sand/strip/jet wash it off.
Next time we got in a Soda Blaster and he did 40m2 in an hour (£100)
-
Thanks, that's great, will def look into that.
-
we use nitromos when removing paint from stone
dont no if it would effect wood
-
Nitromors gives mixed results on Stone, last time I used it on a Flagstone to get the sealer off and it made it very Blochy, took an age of rinsing and Vaxing to get the Blotches out, Solvex from Ltp is virtually the same stuff as well, they both have dichloromethane in them which can give you horrible headaches after a few hours and thats with wearing a mask, they also ruin your protective gloves and make your hands very hot, so not sure whats going on there chemically.
Nitro-mors and Solvex are both listed as being Carcingenic < possible link to Cancer forming agents > so if you value your health keep away from it, I belive their is new legislation coming through from Europe next year which make sure these type of products can no longer be available and Im sure bith Nitro-mors and Ltp are looking at new options for a safer product, just a shame they needed a push from Europe to do so.
And if anyones asking we use Remove and Go for this job, although In the past I have used Aquamix Sealer and Coatings remover in the past both of which are not Carinogenic.

You should be asking your PPE supplier for the right type of filters / gloves.

First thing you need to find is what are you going strip off? as in what stain, make etc.
Then what are you going to do with the wood, after you have stripped it.
Are you going to brighten, sand and then apply a finish.
-
the owner is not sure what stain has been used as the decking was there when he moved in, I think its water based, green in colour, after stripping he would like the wood to be natural, is this is possible?
-
Yes it is, but you will need to brighten the wood after stripping it.
-
If you use Osmo UV protection oil it will keep it natural looking with either a matt or satin finish.
-
thanks for the replys guys!! been a great help! i'm going for it!! lol never returned a stained deck back to natuarl before, but you got to learn some how! fingers crossed.
will let you know how i got on!!
thanks again!

I have a waterbased paint stripper we have been using if anybody gets any stripping jobs.I think Dichloromethane (Nitromors etc) is now banned from use as it is too dangerous!
This waterbased product is far easier to use with better results as it does not dry out on the jobs, and does not stain or bleach the substrate.
My number is 07973216502 cheers chris

Only in the wrong hands, I don't use it anyway, have far quicker methods.
-
Not just in the" wrong hands" but generally.Dichloromethane (most of the"LEADING BRANDS") based paint strippers are being banned for supply to the general public or professionals from 6 December 2011.
Health & Environmental Risk committee, concluded that exposure to DCM is of concern to human health.
The Committee were concerned that DCM may be absorbed both through inhalation and the skin, potentially causing a narcotic effect and depression of the central nervous system.

I know this was being talked about as Dichloromethane can be a cancer forming chemical, which is why I said in the wrong hands, using that chemical needs the correct PPE and some knowledge of chemicals as in the dangers. Has the ban come in? as you state 2011 or is it 2012?
As I said I don't use any of the "leading brands" for what we do anyway.
-
I believe the ban to have taken effect as of december 2011 .By leading brands i refer to most "paint strippers".
I originally used this waterbased stripper for removing Resiblock polyurethane block paving sealer from a drivewaybefore applying acrylic seal but now use it for all my stripping jobs ,driveways,Masonry paint, varnish, graffiti etc. Cheers chris

Not AS1 is it? sounds impressive anyway.
-
Not As1 but it is manufactured by john . Have you used Johns products yourself?

Had a tester of AS1 which I tried, not that impressed with it, but it was a deck strip I was doing. I think AS1 is better for the polyurethane (Resiblock) removal. I make my own strippers for wood, then I can control the strength I need pending on what I am removing.

Shot in the dark really but we are doing a charity project for a local school who have children with severe learning difficulties.
The project involves the renovation of a 1950's Octagonal Paddling Pool. On the walls running round the pool was seating made out of decking which we have removed with the intention of renovating. Having looked at it more closely I think it may have had it's day. Question is any idea where the best place to purchase replacement would be? If we do replace with new what would it be best to treat it with prior to fitting?
