An interesting observation
« on: June 07, 2006, 10:01:13 pm »
There have been a number of discussions on here lately about micro bore hose.
My Mrs wanted a hose reel for her back pack trolley system, this was duly mounted with 25 metres of 6mm I/D micro bore. This is the heavy non kinking stuff from Altec
that I use with my trolley system.
After fitting, the backpack pump really struggled.
This is what I discovered. If I run most of the hose off the reel, the pump works fine, but if I only pull off 5 metres it struggles. As I said this is strong non kinking hose, no chance of it kinking on the reel. My conclusion is that the resistance to flow is greater when the hose is coiled, and the smaller diameter the reel the more resistance there is. I know that some guys are having no problems using 100 psi pumps with 100 metres of hose, but other guys are having problems.
Could it be that the guys that are not having problems are using bigger diameter hose reels? Dai

They all work better uncoiled. Smaller tighter dia reels have more turns so more fluid friction and resistance.
