Can anybody ID these , they where put down in the 1940's and are very porious.

Hard to tell from the pics. How thick are they? They look like dust pressed tiles to me.

A portland cement tile that is kiln dried rather than fired. It has 2 layers. Portland cement on the top and portland/sand for the base.

They dont usually have any glaze to them and as you say are seriously porous.

Most customers want them shiny which can be a nightmare due to their porosity. I always try and swing them in the direction of colour enhancing impregnator.

They take over a week to dry out. Especially this time of year so it will mean a couple of trips.

they tile is a original granwood block tile and was made of a cement based product

I did think Granwood to begin with but was unsure from the pictures. http://www.granwood.co.uk/

Dont phone them for advice. Last time I did they nicked the job. 800m2. They sent one guy to do it and it looked liked something from DIY SOS when he was done.

It is a cement/wood mix. Needs sanding using silicon carbide belts and appropriate dust extractor on a floor sander.

Finishes are polyurethanes from a company called Granwax.
