Sealing a roof... What to use..?
« on: August 20, 2014, 10:08:54 am »
Pressure washed this roof last week now the customer has rung up and wants it sealed, not painted, no colour, clear sealed like a drive so.....

What are the options, I'd like water based and to be able to spray it on, but what is airless spraying? Can I use something like the battery powered cuprinol sprayer ??

Suggestions please

Darran,

Kev Martin does a penetrating sealer that can be sprayed, its clear and can be used on drives etc.. But he would need to confirm is use on a roof. I can't see why it wouldn't be suitable.

Otherwise, search for the companies that sell the roof coatings, as i am sure they would do a clear one.

You can hire airless sprayers from most hire companies, but you will need to be carefull what has been used in them before. An airless sprayer would be easier and a lot faster as you wouldnt need to keep filling up the spraypack.

Miracle 511 H20 Impregnator Water Based or Better still Miracle 511 Original Impregnator.  Don't be put off by the price both easy to apply and you should get enough out of either to do 2 possibly 3 roofs

Put either of those products on that roof with an airless sprayer and you will need a mortgage.
Go for a  water based acrylic with a fairly high solids content . http://www.creative-impressions.com/gemseal-concrete-sealer.html

I've just been using 511 enrich & seal on a Limestone patio from hell!! 44 sq mts, and all I can say is the product goes along way, only used 2lts max 2 coats, so the products are good. Could be different for a roof though, but I'm sure Kevin will advise.

It might be called Miracle ...but he is going to need one.

Smudger be very careful in what product you use....this is not a fine grain sand or lime stone . It very porous rough aggregate . It will absorb anything you put near like a hooker on coke.
An airless spray gun will empty the 4 ltr tub in a matter of minutes.

Kevin when did you last seal a knackered concrete tile roof with this product?
Whilst I have every respect for you and your products ...I think you are offering the wrong advice....but I have also being wrong on many occasions .

Yep ...Teflon would work.(
Still think high solids waterbased acrylic is better...in this instance.

Really interested in your stuff Kevin, I like the fact that this penetrates into the surface rather than sits on top as the customer wants the 'natural' look retained.

My worry/concern is getting this coverage and how to do it.

Personally I don't want to brush it on, long winded and faffy, rollers are ok but surely 1 ltr can't be spread out that far ????

I would like to spray, but never used airless sprayer but have used the pump sprayers and battery powered sprayers for fencing

Spraying it on will be fine in this situation but obviously you would not get the maximum coverage out of it applying it in this way

Miracle 511 H20 Plus 3.785L (US GALLON)  will cover 46-279m2/Coat

Miracle 511 Porous  Plus 3.785L (US GALLON)  will cover 46-186m2/Coat

Miracle 511 Impregnator 3.785L (US GALLON)  will cover 46-370m2/Coat

This will obviously depend on the porosity of the tile
