Big oil stain
« on: August 24, 2014, 08:26:53 pm »
*****************PICS AT BOTTOM OF PAGE*********************

I have a large gray block paving driveway to clean. It has two large oil stains about 1m2 each and a few smaller blobs here and there. The customer said the two large stains have been there for over 2 years so as you can imagine there pretty crusty.

Im just wondering what people think is the best way to try removing this stain, I have had some good results using OT8 straight on to the drive dry, but iv never had a stain this old and cruddy before. Is there any thing else I could try before using the OT8 to thin out the stain first or will it just take repeat treatments ?

Cheers Justin

What is the substrate? In my experience and oil stain that old can be problematic.

Im not sure Neil , I have told t he customer that I cant guarantee that I can completely remove it and she was happy with that , but Im worried about how bad this stain is and that it wont remove it at all. Ive never used OT8 on any thing as thick as this.

You could try using resiblock OR to start with as this can only be used on a dry service, and after this if there is still a need to you can use the ot8 stuff

Depending on what the customer wants, how much they are willing to spend and how old the driveway is, you could replace the blocks with ones from the edges or an inconspicuous place. If you try and clean them and still can't get a decent result then this could be an idea if you aren't satisfied with the results 100%

That's what I would do, clean it then if possible switch the blocks with others in less seen places.

Ive never used resiblock or do you rate it better than OT8 ?
Kevin i presume I can go and try OT8 first and them come back another day when its dry to try resiblock OR ? just I already have the OT8, and I know its going to take a few trips. Kevin Miller am I right in thinking you sell resiblock or and other things? I might be thinking of someone else.

Heres a picture of one of the stains I cant remember if it was the worst of the two, there was a car parked over the other stain so couldn't get a good look at it.

IMO that won't come out, especially with it being old.

You can dramatically improved it tho with the methods and products mentioned above.

I think you will definitely still have some shadowing. If someone does think they could permanently remove this id be interested to know how.

Yeah I thought it was a bit to much :( I have been realistic with them. I guess ill just have to do my best because she really wants it cleaning. I dont like the thought of doing a job a leaving a stain there still.

No mate don't sell anything lol. You can use your ot8 then go back at a later date and try resiblock or as long as it's dry. Not sure if it's better than ot8 I've heard good reports on both. Only ever used resiblock or once on a light oil patch which was not that big.

Bit of a tough one, I'd clean first then OT8 go for a longer dwell time, clean off re-apply OT8 again and see what you have left at the end of this process. You could go for the poultice after this, think you might be left with shadowing though, as the stain does look quite old.

I'd get a quote from a landscaper to lift the blocks on that one and move affected blocks to other hidden areas. You could be there all day or back 2 or 3 times only to see the oil shadow still there after cleaning.

Sure went to the job today to make a start, the first treatment was surprisingly good, did a second treatment but didnt have time to stay till i dried you can still see a shadow but it did look alot better when it was dried after the first treatment so im guessing it will look ok when dry. Going to leave it about 5 days to see if the OT8 keeps working and brings any more to the surface, then go and treat it again, if there's still a visible shadow I will try Resiblock.

After I cleaned the drive the first time I found loads of smaller oil stains about 10/15 of them and I found them alot harder to shift.

That's not bad mate, the OT8 won't work for very long IMO as in leaving it on, least not 5 days, If you are getting these results with the OT8, then I'd stick with if you are going back there to apply again, as the OT8 will draw the stain to the top bit by bit and from the photos seems to be working well.
As Mr Miller said "Well Done"  :D

Hi concept , im a newby here so dont have that much experience but every time ive used it ive had pretty good results, ive always put it on dry then waited till it was just about dry then wet with water & scrub again ....I repeat this for an hour.
Not sure if it's because I've put it on dry or I've just been lucky but it's got to be worth ago.
