Hi folks.  So today was the first day of this job.   

Got on eally well.  We allocated ourselves a day for downstairs and a day each for the other 2 floors.   All downstairs done and most of second floor and even started the 'bog of horor'

dug all the old dry poo out of the bog and got to the nice sloppy stuff at the u bend.  It seems to be blocked with newspaper,

Anyway, the sink and the bath were both blocked.  Unblocked the sink but now the bath starts to fill as the sink drains.  With the plug in the bath the level in the bog goes up.   The waste stack is totally boxed into the wall so I recon the blockage must be in there somewhere.   

Anyone got any  tips or recommend any good products that may  help.   Is it just a case of removing the bog and trying the old rods out.

I knew the bog was going to be the worst part of the job but was kind of hoping it wouldn't be as bad as I thought ( if you know what I mean)

I think I will have to try and remove the toilet and then rod it.   I will have a google and see what I can find.


Drive surgeon.   The toilet thing isnt my favourite either but with all the proper kit on it aint all that bad, you cant smell anything, but the squelching and slopping noises do remind you of what you are playing with.

I had a great response with One Stop Drain Unblocker recently.

Best buy 2-3 bottles.

It is basically Sulphuric acid, pour it in and it will disolve the organic material.

Pour into bath & sink plug holes and the bog, wait half an hour and then wash through.

I added hot water to mine and it reacted violently, so be careful with hot water, although it really flushed it through.

Spirit of salts is good, 32% Hydrocholic acid, but the other stuff is stronger.

Costs about £5.99 a bottle large)

Can you access the stack from outside, you might be able to take off the cover and rod it from there

I was going to say the same thing.

If you can get to the foul drain outside it will be easier to break it down from there, this is what I do.

My drains get blocked up now and again so I get my porty extracter (Altec) and fill it up with water and put it on high heat so its ni on boiling, then get my water pipes,  and take off the end so the water comes out and 'rod' it down the drain.

You are then steaming the drain out.

Works a treat.

Just make sure that you tape over any joins you have on the water pipe or you may find that you leave a water pipe up the drain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh and wear gloves and wash everything down afterwards.

PS. A plumber I know says the best thing for him at the moment is cleaning blocked drains out as lots of people are using environmently recycled loo paper etc. Evidently it doesnt break down as easily as the usual  Andrex type and blocks soil pipes up very easily.
