Hi Colin,

Any biocide, fungicidal type product will kill off the algae and making cleaning easier. It is not a good idea to reguarly pressure wash any kind of paving as this is the equivalent to accelerated weathering. Pressure washing leads to the stone becoming more porous and more susceptible to algae, lichen growth etc.

The best thing to do is properly clean it once, then seal it with a good quality patio sealer. The sealer will greatly extend the time it takes the algae to form and make future removal far easier.

thanks for that the patio is approx 60 sq m I've looked at sealers but they all appear to be expensive,what is the best sealer for Indian sand stone,and how much.
Re sealing some people say don't seal it,what's the way to go ,seal or not to seal

Yes good quality sealer is exspensive but you get what you pay for and you get good coverage as well.  Sandstone definately needs sealing IMO

Here are coverage rates

Aqua mix sealers choice gold 28-93m2/3.78L this for all tiles will not alter the colour at all
Aqua Mix Enrich N Seal 46-140m2/3.78l enhancing sealer only really for natural stone but does work in some other situatios
Aqua mix ultra solv 37-140m2/3.78L solvent based all tiles will not alter colour
Aqua mix penetrating sealer 28-93m2/3.78l water based economy sealer natural stone use
Aqua mix pro-solv 28-140m2/3.78l solvent based economy sealer use of all tiles

I will add that the coverage on the sealers are well under estimated

Don't put a solvent sealer on your sandstone . Use a waterbased impregnating one..that ideally should be moisture permeable.
I believe Kevin Martin has a safer more cost effective way of keeping Indian sandstone looking good.
