Cold calling
« on: December 18, 2013, 01:04:09 am »
Hey guys, just wanted some advice on cold calling(canvassing)I have noticed more and more houses now have stickers on the doors saying'NO cold callers'..... does this put you off canvassing? I'm assuming it's not against the law but you may encounter some unpleasantness.

Also looking to build round abit and don't want to go the canvassing company route but just wondering if any of u guys have any experience on hiring a canvasser(I'm thinking a student or someone)who is happy to just do 5 or 6 hours a week on a ad- hoc basis. Any advice would be great :-)

if it says no canvassing then don't knock, card or leaflet the property and you will still pick the odd job up

I just leaflet everything and knock a couple of days later to ask if they got my flyer through the letter box. If they say yes, I ask if they're interested.
If they say no I didn't get one, I say never mind, are you interested.
If they tell me they have a sticker saying no cold calling, I say sorry, are you interested.

A bit complicated, I know. Works for me though. ;)
No still don't understand, I must be thick

I think canvassing is going to get a lot harder.
The amount of cold calling I get at my door now compared to a few years ago is unreal.
A lot of companies and charities seem to be doing this now and they don't know how to take
no for an answer.
To be honest, only I have been there and know how hard it is I also would have a sticker up.

Cold callers get a frosty reception from me anyway, if I had a sticker up and they ignored it I would not be a happy camper. >:(

Sorry but I ignore all stickers of this kind.  In fact, when I have asked whether they minded me knocking because of the sign they have mostly said that they don't include window cleaning under their definition of 'cold calling'.

Round here the council went on a binge of delivering the stickers to every house for free so they are on virtually every house window or door - if I did take notice I wouldn't be able to canvass 85% of the houses.

If they do answer the door and mention the sign just say 'sorry, I only saw the sign after I had knocked and I thought it would be rude to then walk away before you answered the door'.

Crack on is the best way - most are relieved you're not selling Gas, Electric or PPI for a change.

Cheers, Tom

Thanks tom :-) some useful advice. I definitely agree with your point. Does anyone know the best way to get a canvasser on a ad hoc basis? What is the going rate these days to pay them per hour?

Graham, I find with leaflets through doors I hardly get any call backs at all. I think if you want to pick up work knocking is the only way. I distributed 500 leaflets last Saturday and not one single call..... but I would rather pay someone to go out and canvass for me as don't want to spend time out of work canvassing myself  ::)roll
