Lol,  :D :D  I like it mate

serious question though

Does one service, cleaning that is, have a higher mark up on average. e.g

Window Cleaning, Scratch removal, Drop chair W/C, Gutter Cleaning, Preasure washing.

If one person was the stick to one service, then another for each service, and fill the weeks back to back with work. Is one more likely to make the higher income, due to markup on this service.

My point is what is the most profitable additional service.

To keep this as a window cleaning thread I've deleted some of the replies rather than move it to the any other business section.

If you all wish to continue in the same humorous vein that is fine, but it will have to be shunted into the other section should you wish to do so...

And Tosh, don't tell me Simon is looking into the WFP side of things is he??

Forget about Your Lass canvansing or cleaning windows; do what I do; it ensures you keep good accounts.

What I would suggest is on larger commercial stuff is to get Your Lass to carry a clipboard, a tape measure and a large funnel about.

If any of your customers ask what that's about, just shake your head and say, 'You don't want to know'.  Imply it's got something to do with WAHD 2005 and 'ladders aren't allowed anymore'.

You could also use a car battery, a paint roller and a jar of marmite.  Anyone carrying such a combination about about is sending the message, 'I have a long boring story to tell, if only you have an hour-or-two to listen'.

You'll get left alone to clean those windows.

Where can you get trained as a chimney sweep? I'm dead serious, the local sweep is now charging £50 per pot, and will only come if you can get him another customer in the same street. He did both and was gone within an hour.

What happened to Jeff1's lack of hair and success question?

Ian_Giles, you git, I have a valid - work related - answer to it; I can't believe you deleted his post; especially while I was formulating the answer while eating dinnner!

Wor Lass was asking me - in-between chomping on her pasta - what was on my mind (my blank expression must've gave her the impression I was thinking about something), and I couldn't tell her the truth, 'Er, Jeff1's hair'.

So I just said, 'Winda cleaning stuff'.

That shut her up!

Jeff, if you want to re-ask your question, you're quite welcome too.

Mine charges me £30; you're getting ripped off.

And at your age, 75-years-old, your far too gone to retrain too.  Just stick with polishing those windows with your chammy; like what a French Polisher does.  I know your type!

However, if you really do want to be a chimney sweep, get one of your kids, the smallest one to do it; send him/her up it and Bob's your Granny; you'll be coining it in.

Dear Gerard,

Maybe, maybe not.

But as a general rule I would suggest you don't make the mistake of working extra hard in providing a class result in hope that you get a nice 'pat on the back', and a bottle of cheap red wine at Christmas from your customers.

The difference between performing at 'exceeds expectations' level versus 'meets expectations' is likely to be about two-percent-per-clean-per-year!

Mathematically speaking, in the long run, you're much better off doing a shoddy job (ie 'meets expectations'); it makes sense financially.

The windows on the Space Shuttle are actually made out of aluminum silicate glass and fused silica glass. The orbiter windows are actually three different panes, there's an interior pressure pane because the pressure inside the orbiter is a lot higher than it is in the vacuum of space.

We also have an optical pane that's installed in the middle that's about three and a half inches thick and on the outside, there's a thermal pane that protects the inside of the cockpit from the high heats of ascent and reentry.

There are six forward-looking windows, three on the CDR (Commander) side and three on the PLT (Pilot) side. There are two overhead windows that the crew out of especially when docking to the Space Station they're using those windows to watch the orbiter approach the Space Station. And then there are two windows on the aft that look into the payload bay, and depending on our hatch configuration on the inside, there can be anywhere from one to two additional windows, they're small holes that are installed inside the hatches so you can look through hatch windows. And the side hatch, the emergency egress hatch, has a small hatch window as well.

They're all made of the same materials. The forward windows - the ones that the crew actually uses for ascent and entry - are the ones we have to take really good care of in order to maintain the optical quality of them, so we use the best trained window cleaners.

Dear Jeff1,

This is one of those 'firstly' and 'secondly' answers; so I'll firstly start with your 'hair' question.

It's a well known fact that when the economy is slow, all the best paid window cleaning jobs are taken by people with great hair; I've just won a nice contract on the basis of having good hair.

The baldies are forced to scramble for the crumbs.  But in the current economic down-turn, there aren't enough pretty-haired people to get all the best accounts; therefore if you're bald and competing with other shiny-headed window cleaners, you'll have to rely on humour to have the edge on your folically challenged rivals.

Humour can be a tie-breaker for people whose hair; or rather lack of; has limited 'quality-account-attracting' potential.

Secondly, Squeaks isn't just balding; he's wee-smelling-ging-ger and balding.  Do I need to say more?

In flight would count as an 'access issue' so I'd add another quid on top of the fiver.

I think that depends on a number of factors; there's never an easy answer to this commonly asked question.

Factor 1.   How big is your pole and how ridgid is it?  Not many grannies like the small floppy type poles.

Factor 2.   How good are you doing the job by hand and what size squeegie do you use?

Obviously size is a major factor in both methods.

Personally, Wor Lass prefers the pole; but sometimes likes it done by hand; depending on what area she's concentrating on.

I guess you've just got to be more 'customer focussed'!

It's a metaphor for 'leverage' in the form of nagging, Malc!

'Get off that computer you geek and come and see to my needs*; now!', shouts Wor Lass.

'Groan!  Do I have to; again?  I'm knackered', Me.

So by nagging, she 'crowbars' me into bed!

Dave.

Pingu,

It's good to see that you're thinking 'outside of the box', but you're using the wrong approach.

There's nothing you can do about spiders; personally I hate them; I nearly dropped an account recently because I walked face first into a massive spider's web and screamed like a little girl.

So, what you've got to do for 'spider-heavy-accounts' is get them prices up.  Remember, the only reason your customer pays you is because they'd rather be doing other stuff than cleaning windows; especially ones covered in spiders and their sticky mess.

And the more hideous the task, the more money you should charge.

For example, Take brain surgery.  That job pays very well, but you have to touch people's brains all day.  I don't know about you, but I'm sufficiently frightened by what comes out of people's mouths and noses; I'm sure I don't want my fingers any closer to the source of all this snot and gunk.

And although I haven't tried brain surgery, I know I wouldn't enjoy any activity that involves saws and human skulls.

So take a leaf out of a brain surgeon's book and charge well for doing unpleasant tasks.

No, Rod, not at all; canvass away.

In fact a good place to canvass would be a place called Mynyddbach (pronounced 'Minith-Back (you may have to add a noise as if you're clearing your throat at the end of the name))'  (I'm sure the Welsh are a dyslexic nation)); it's quite a posh area just outside of Chepstow; but make sure you take your ladders with you while you canvass; I bet you get loads!

Apparantly the locals there don't like their current WFP user, but that's not surprising considering he's ging-ger and balding. ;D

It is Saturday night and I am in on my own (well might as well be!) if I took up window cleaning would I have a data base of single women I could "pop around and see"?

Is it true that window cleaners are employed more for their looks and size of their pole rather than the ability to clean windows or is this just a 1970s myth ???

However, due to the 1833 Slavery Abolition Act this is no longer feasible, but there are ‘work-arounds’ to this law that are often utilised by the building trade and McDonald restaurants.

So, what you’ve got to do is put the following ad in your local phone box:
Quote
Wanted: an illegal immigrant, or a Welshman for cleaning windows.  Must work hard for a tax-free-income; cash in hand; no questions asked.  An ability to speak English is preferred, but not essential.  Must own and be able to use all limbs.

Don’t forget to leave your anonymous mobile telephone number with the advertisement.

And ensure you pay him far less than the minimum wage, and you’ll soon be raking it in; big-style!

I know a few members of this forum who do similar (though they prefer ‘The Welsh’ rather than an illegal immigrant (less paper-work aparrantly)); and as the negro slaves used to say, ‘If we weren’t slaves, they’d use the Welsh as slaves’.

So get yourself a Welshman!

Tosh - sorry to be pedantic but slavery was abolished in 1807 in Britain - I know because here in Bristol the "do-gooders" tell us we've all got to wear sackcloth and ashes for the sins of our forefathers.

Except my forefathers in the early 1800's were living in the primordial soup of being in-service and doing other stuff in the gutter at the bottom of the secular food chain - in fact it wasn't until WW1 that my paternal gran got out of it. Then only because she married Grandad who went through the trenches and came out without a scratch on his body but several great scars on his mind.

The new "Cabot Circus" shopping mall in Bristol was going to be called "Merchant's quarter" but some wobbly bosomed Molly Sugden lookalikes on the council didn't want to offend anybody with "Merchant" when you might add the pre-fix "Slave" to it!

I personally would add the suffix "Bankers" after it to describe the waste of council funds that have gone on this self-flagellating nonsense.

Anyway, "Rant" over!  ;D ;D ;D

It wasn't until 1833 that Slavery was abolished in the empire and Wales don't count cuz it was part of England and Wales (and Monmouthshire), so there!
It's a game of three halves!

Tosh
