Hi

i was just wondering is it better to have a co.uk buisness website or .com i know the difference between the 2 but was just wondering if it really makes a difference what you have as there is .net too guess this is something ww could shed some light on as i am thinking of changing my trading name. any input would be great.

obviously .com is more international, so if you plan to expand abroad then go for .com.

If however you want to reassure you potential customers you are a british company then .co.uk is good.

having .co.uk does not mean you are obviously a smaller business, think about www.bbc.co.uk!

i would like a .co.uk address but most seem to be taken that i have tried but can get them in .net does things like this make any difference to rankings on search engines etc and would commercial clients tend to go for someone with a .co.uk address then a .net one.

It makes no difference at all, give me a call if you want to have a chat about it and I will give you some pointers.

Art not sure what you want me to explain but I will say what I think you are asking, .com.net.org are international domain names (including the uk) .co.uk is a uk domain name run by nominet as is .org.uk
anything .org was based at charities now anyone can register what they like.

there is not really any difference, some people that no very little about the internet will type in .com uk and vice versa.

I have quite a many many domain names they include .com's .nets. .co.uk .org.uk, .biz and .info

A very good .com domain has far more value then any other domain name I know this as I sold thousands of every domain name that people know about apart from .biz and .info as I stopped before they came out.

as for .com v .co.uk I would go for the .co.uk for window cleaning if only in uk both if they are available I would recommend getting them both.
as for online marketing 1 v the other has pitfalls and benifits but overall to be honest makes veryt little difference.

Not much more I can say on this Art.

final word if you can get the .co.uk do so if you can get both great.

Thanks Ian, that wasn't what i was getting at.

Try this on google: type in "office cleaners slough" with "the web" option, both my sites are on page one.
Now try it with the "pages from the uk " option, it's only my .co.uk site that is on page one.

Search:  the web *  pages from the UK *

It gives you either of the 2 above options and it's got nothing to do with google.com or google.co.uk they both end up one the same site.

Are you with me now  ;D

personally I would go for .co.uk

there's nothing worse than to be looking at a site and wondering if it is american or not.

If you are .co.uk then theres no doubt its british and therefore relevant.

Just my humble opinion

Never took it as a dig Ian, I don’t know much about websites and the internet. I paid for mine through a friend of ours who got his own website company. I have .com as the main address also .co.uk then we secured some similar names.

I’ve seen some of the websites you have done they are good and excellent value for the money. You are undercharging even if you double your price they will still be excellent value.

I don’t know how much time you put into building a site or how big a part it is of your business, but the customer is getting a lot more than they pay you. I’m sure any (understanding) new customers will gladly part with more cash.

Good luck (and put your prices up) Ewan

Cheers for that Ewan,

Ian

Personally I would prefer a .com over .co.uk as it's simpler to say when giving people your email/ web address. Nowadays people are good at remembering either one and are happy dealing with either so it doesn't really matter too much. I went for .eu myself :D

As said earlier its probably best to have a .co.uk (in the uk) but its also a good idea to (if possible) buy the .com version, most hosts will direct the .com to the .co.uk for free anyway.     .coms are a good buy at the moment with the exchange rate, under £4.00 iif you shop around... ;)
