Cleaning/restoring and old slate fireplace.
« on: April 07, 2014, 06:37:16 pm »
Does anybody on this forum do this kind of stuff?  I hope I've posted in the correct forum?  Anyway, it's covered in a kind of yellow enamel paint.  I would imagine it dates back to the 19th century.  Also, it has some chips in it.  How does one fill these in and restore/reapir?  Thank you.

PS  I did initially post this elsewhere on the forum and it was suggested to me to post it here.

Hi again,

This is what I meant by a slate fireplace.  They're covered in a kind of enamel paint and there's a few minor chips.  The first below is the right hand upright.

The next one is the left hand upright.  There's also a croos-bar not in the pic which fits across joining the two uprights.  I'm not sure what would have gone across the bottom part although I've found a slate flag-stone in the garde which may have fittet across the bottom.  It could also have been a mantle-piece shelf I suppose.  You can see from the bottome of bothe images the uprights are indented without paint and I'm sure something went across this.  The top of both are also the same to the rear and allows the cross-piece to joint both together like a jig-saw forming a kind of letter 'n'.

I'm not sure if this is revelevant to this forum but I would like to find out how to clean them and renovate them if you know what I mean.....They make a nice addition to a bedroom.  I think they've been hidden for decades and probably date from the 19th century.  Thanks.

I just found a pic of the cross-piece joining the tops of the two above.  Here it is:

Looking at those photos I would say the cost of restoration far outweighs any value that could be place on the final finished product

OK thanks Kev Martin.  Any advice on cleaning the pieces of slate up and 'fixing' the small areas which are chipped?  I can't bring myself to throw it away or close the fireplace up.
