Data protection act
Posted by Rob_B (Rob_B), 16 January 2004
I was reading an article about a firm who were conning local businesses out of money by offering to register them with whoever concerning the data protection act. Turns out they could do it themselves £100 cheaper.

Anyway to get to the point, it said that all companies who keep customer records on computers must be registered with the data protection act. I guess this means all who use George Huh

Is anyone else registered, and should george users be Huh

Hi Rob
I am not sure but i use George as well so would be interested in knowing Huh  I thought that you only needed to register if you kept financial details of customers such as credit card details etc Huh

Hi

I'm doing some research on the subject - I'm pretty sure you don't need to register but the Act relates to the Data not the computer system so if you do need to register, it applies to paper based systems too !!!

This link relates to the original post:

Hi

According to this:

http://www.informationcommissioner.gov.uk/cms/DocumentUploads/Notification%20Exemptions%20-%20A%20Self%20Assessment%20Guide.pdf

you don't need to register if the information is for "Core business purposes" and/or "Accounts and records".

I think that covers you...

Thanks Paul for the link Wink Looks like we are all ok then but like you say whether its computer based or not is irrelevant.

Yes, thanks Paul, The article didn't go into much detail about the information that you needed to be registered for so i thought i would just ask.

Hi Guys

I'm not an expert on the Data Protection Act - my message was my own interpretation of the document.

You really need to look at it yourselves to ensure I'm not misleading you...

Paul
